Drawing inspiration from Brasa, we have here an exceptionally slim and innovative rear light for cycles. The design optimizes the use of Light Line Technology (LLT), where the technique and optics clearly offset the single string of lights from the rest of the body, giving the impression that a red line is floating in the air. An easily accessible switch and simple battery removal, make it very practical and efficient light. As the designer explains, “The LLT uses one LED only and the extra-wide shape of its light guide allows a great visibility on both corners, offering more visibility and safety for the user and other road users

Odorico Pordenone is a delightful caravan that expands its seams to accommodate you and your folks quite comfortably. For a person who is never intimidated by the size of the car that I am driving, a bulky trailer somehow manages to unnerve me. Looking into this idea’s perfect fusion of design, technological and architectural approach, I think this one has nailed it good. Leaf Wireless Mouse scores big time on looks and has a decent enough direction as far as tech aspects go. The one thing that we do with our mouse the most is to move it around. Based on this, the designers have created a concept that uses its motion to self-power the mouse. It sounds like a whiff of air for now, but imagine if we could have a wireless mouse that did not tank up on so many batteries every month? Because I use it so much, I tend to replace my Magic Mouse battery every 7-8 days.

Clutch your pearls because I’m about to say something amazing – nanoparticles! Yes these tiny, near invisible objects can revolutionize the bio medical, optical and electronic fields so designer Ilshat Garipov put pen to paper and came up with the Smartphone Booklet –  a disposable phone as thin as a cardboard made possible by switching from traditional silicon to nanoparticles. The Booklet unfolds like a pamphlet with each side representing a commonly used application or function. Manufacturers can cut it to any size and once it’s worn out, just recycle it.

Not a Pamphlet, It’s a Smartphone

Rediscover the art of writing to your friends rather than typing on cold keyboards. Get it done with ‘Handwriting’, a digital tool fashioned as a pen that replicates this long forgotten art! Photoelectric sensors on the tip record your messages and transfer to your chat-friends via the Internet. Your friend’s chat appears on the side screen of the pen. Friends online and available for tête à tête are indicated via flashy lights and I think its kinda cool. As the name suggests Topless Shoes have no upper constrictions or bindings. It’s like sinking your foot into a warm cushy hole and expecting it to ‘walk’ with you at every step. The elastic layer called ‘muscle’ parts under the foot and encloses it in a firm yet comfortable grip. Ideal for folks who find wearing shoes a huge task, and I’d sure like to give them a try. Topless Shoes is a 2011 red dot concept design winner.

I resonate with the need for the Car Compass because I have been in this situation once. A friend had parked his hired car in the public car park and he forgot which floor it was on. We literally had to go to each floor of the 10 floors to figure out where the car was. Now if we had something like this Car Compass key then it would have guided us to the exact location of the car, using arrows and pointers on it’s display

Adding a third dimension to bendable neon tubes can have spectacular results. I’m talking about the Neon Tetra, a mood lamp that breaks the 100 year old tradition of glass tube bending only in 2 D. Vibrant and soulfully geometric, the lamp looks Über cool in pink, blue, red, green and yellow hues. As the designers point out, “looks high tech, cold to touch & consumes lesser power compared to light bulbs.” Me wants! Fully Precious Beans are ambient solar-powered light balls, intended to be a playful fun accessory to your interiors. For most part of 2011, I focused on serious designs, ones with a purpose in life. However I think 2012 is the year to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures in life…a time to have fun with green glow balls that enjoy sunlight as much as I do! Steve Jobs hired designer Hartmut Esslinger as the modern-day Snow White for his projects code-named after the seven dwarfs. The vision was to infuse Apple products with “born-in-America gene” and DNA inspired by “Hollywood and music, a bit of rebellion and natural sex appeal.” Hartmut’s mantra was simple, “Form follows emotion,” a twist on the maxim that form follows function. Yanko Design respects both these aphorisms but believes that we should not limit creativity within the realms of form, function and emotions; thus we follow Form Beyond Function. 2011 has been a significant year in terms of historical uprisings, financial stability, nature’s rebuke and the loss of visionaries. However the silver lining to the gloom is the perseverance of our belief that the best is yet to come
